The Creative Day Planner from Life Composition is a collaboration between Bonnie Chandler and singer/songwriter and novelist, Nerissa Nields. In their words it is a "12 Month Life Planner which will organize your life, inspire your muse, keep you company and keep you amused."

What arrived at my doorstep was a blue, cloth-covered, three-ring binder that holds standard-sized 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Also included was a packet of art supplies to make my planner more fun. These goodies included things such as watercolor paints, a few crayons, various stickers, fibers and ribbon, paper and fabric samples and a small needlepoint kit.

The outside of my planner was already somewhat customized with a stamped sun element directly above the title, and my initials (with stickers) on the spine area.

While one could alter the outsides of the planner with additional inks, paints, stamping, etc. I chose to keep mine just as I received it for the time being.

The first thing inside the planner was a pocket, constructed of paper collage scraps and pop-up tape, in which I found my "menu" to mail back in. This was a customized list of likes/dislikes and goals which are used by Nerissa in sending your planner page. I'm assuming that Bonnie also uses the menu in planning the "treat/toy/tool kits" that will arrive twice a year.

A big part of the customized planner page is what they refered to as the "big rocks." Explanation? We should make plans to take care of our big rocks first, (our real prioirities) and then the smaller less important things (the sand, if you will) can filter through the day. My own resulting customized page (which repeats EVERY day throughout the year) also included an exercise and food log.

The sample "big rock" pages that are designed to be on the left side of the planner, had a color border and some color at the top. Sad to say, the customized one (that arrived via e-mail from Nerissa a couple of weeks after mailing in my information) no longer had the color. I miss it.

The second largest element of the planner were the daily pages. This is a DIFFERENT page for each day, having the typical place for recording appointments. Not typical to other planners, this page also included an inspirational quote at the top and a place at the bottom to record what you'd learned through life that day... nice touch. For some reason these pages were sent via a disc through the US mail from Bonnie a couple of weeks after Nerissa's emailed page arrived. It doesn't seem that there is a customization feature on these, and it could have made the process simpler had the disc arrived WITH the planner.

My computer had trouble "playing nice" with the disc. I tried various methods of opening the tiff attachments on the disc. Most were unsuccessful. My photo software was able to open only SOME of the daily attachments, but I never was able to get them to print that way. In an effort to get this review underway, I went to the DIY Planner website that Bonnie recommended as a place to gather further forms. I printed March and April daily pages there. I lost my color and quotes that way, but at last, about a month after receiving it, my planner was ready to set up! LATER NOTE: My husband, a professional in the computer field, at last came to my rescue and installed GIMP (a free download) and my daily pages from Life Composition are now printable for me. I will start with the May pages and go on.

The two daily pages are the real "meat" of the planner, but there are other features unique to the Creative Day Planner.

To supplement the planner is a website (in its early stages of development) in the form of a Yahoo group to discuss ideas on how to get the most from the planner. There are also some ideas (with photos) on customizing the cover. Bonnie sends an email through this group at least once a week with a challenge or idea, and Nerissa has a monthly inspirational reading.

Once I had all of my pages printed from my home printer, I decided to add page protectors where the dividing tabs are, and include works of art inside to truly make the planner "mine." I began with a cover page of some of my favorite people and things.

The nice thing about these office-type page protectors is they are readily available and inexpensive. One of the protectors hold my four-year-old's art work. She is always handing me a new page she has colored or "layout" she has created. She feels important to have something included in my planner!

Here is how I set it up:

After my "cover page" is the current week's "exercise" card (the others I removed and placed in a drawer. I'll take them out as I need them.) This is followed by the monthly calendars that were included so I can quickly find any 2007 date quickly and easily.

Tabbed Section - Visions
This is the place for things I WANT to do eventually, hopes and dreams type of stuff. I'm notorious for losing papers that I jot notes on. Now I don't! Following are forms that are not yet in use, but available when they are needed: My Storyboard, Idea Incubator, Plan It -- Do It, etc.

Tabbed Section - Intentions
This is the where I have included contests, DT calls and publication calls that interest me, filed by date. I simply print the info from our forum, three-hole-punch and insert into the binder. When the gig is up, I pitch the paper.

Tabbed Section - Plans
I have a large grid March calendar (that takes up both left and right pages) where I can write monthly appointments and see them all at a glance. Following are the daily pages for March (and April) as described earlier in this review. My planner is pretty full, so I'll be removing my daily pages at the end of each month and filing them in case I need to refer to them later. I plan to keep only the current and following month in the planner to carry around with me.

Tabbed Section - Actions
This is where I keep my business records for our friends at the IRS including business miles, expenses, etc.

Tabbed Section - Goodies
This section contains favorite sketches and layout ideas that I want to try. In the very back of the planner I keep special projects that will be swapped out. Right now it contains the information I got from the bride-to-be for wedding flowers I'm doing for her in July.

The Creative Day Planner is hefty. It isn't a little thing that tucks into your pocket. I felt that in order for it to do what I wanted it to, I had to be able to not only carry it with me, but protect it from the elements. I purchased a medium sized business purse with a large center pocket. The planner fits perfectly!

This planner is not what I expected. First note: EXPECT the unexpected! It is not your typical planner. While I could have easily enjoyed having everything pre-printed and handed to me, the "free form" forced me to really look at what was important to me and set it up accordingly. Perhaps this was their intention all along?

The fact that there was little direction given for set-up was a frustration for me. When I was sent a planner with the expectation to take the time to write in it by hand, I expected some clear-cut directions on how it was intended to be used. Apparently not including them is intentional. It is truly the type of planner to set up however you see fit. If you want a pre-printed planner, all laid out with precise directions, this one is probably not the one for you. If you are a free spirit, independent, or off the grid of the usual planner then snatch this one up! The cost? $91.00 - $79.00 plus $12.00 shipping, available by mail only.

My initial impression, it HAS been helpful. This planner is not a miracle worker, it won't plan your schedule for you, drive your kids to ball practice, or provide you with better nutrition. It IS a means for sorting out those things that are important to you however, and assisting you to make the plan that you need to follow through with them. I found that I am more organized and more productive after faithfully using it for the past month. I look forward to my continued journey this year.

When the ad for the "Life Composition: The Creative Day Planner" arrived on the top of the ScrapFriends forum one day, I must admit that I was pretty interested. The catchy collaged graphic of the banner ad caught my eye as I happily clicked to see where it would lead me. The website was quite interesting and full of great material to read and explore. Nerissa is the "life coach" leading you into a more creative day, every day. I believed what Nerissa had to say in that sometimes you need to plan to be creative. I was intrigued, but honestly didn't follow through to a purchase. Afterall, I hadn't carried a "real" planner for about 10 years, (Wow! Has it been awhile!) so why would I really need one now?

The opportunity to review the Creative Day Planner was too good to pass up. I figured that I could really use a planner since trying to balance my work life and creative time has become a challenge. I received this really neat box with the planner and all sorts of goodies inside, how exciting!

Title: Just opening the box

Upon pulling out the bag of assorted ephemera, colored pencils, ribbon, binder clips and feathers (yes, real ones!), I came upon the planner itself. The blue fabric-covered 1" D-ring binder was a site to see! It's unlike any planner that I had ever seen before - filled with swatches of many different types of papers, daily check-in sheets, a cardboard divider with eyelets and ribbon, monthly calendar pages and other planning kinds of pages. Whew! What a cornucopia of material! I immediately thought that if this didn't inspire me, what would?

Title: Opened planner

There were instructions included to fill out the "interest inventory" and send it back in ASAP. Doing this would allow Nerissa to personally tailor daily check-in pages to our goals or "big rocks" as she calls them. The personalization really appealed to me - how cool, just for me and my "big rocks"? The daily page would also be personalized according to the theme that I picked to focus on - making time for my crafting and creativity. Angel Bonnie, Nerissa's helper, would supply those pages packed with quotes and graphics to inspire along that theme. I quickly filled out the questionnaire and sent it back within a day. Ok!

After "taking care of business", I explored the binder and bag full of goodies. The welcome note from Nerissa said that the check-in pages would oppose the daily pages in the binder so that when looking at one day, you could see a free-form page with your specific goals and a traditional timed schedule at the same time. Hmmm, interesting I thought since nothing was dated or tailored for me yet. The tabbed sections were very generic: visions, intentions, plans, actions and goodies. I wasn't sure where to start with that, so I opened the bag of goodies and thought about a cover design.

Since this planner was about scheduling more creative time, what better way to start than to really make it mine? I had a small canvas covered piece of chipboard that I had been wanting to use, so I melted some of the crayons in the package with a small craft iron to create some encaustic art on the canvas. FUN! I added patterned paper, lace, photo corners and of course a feather on top of the wax, all coming from the goodie bag. I was compelled to add a microscope slide with a collaged graphic titled "c'est la vie" (that's life) to the upper part of the canvas as a final touch. The binder cover was painted with acrylic paint, stamped and collaged with other pieces from the goodie bag. I added the mini canvas with hot glue with a royal flush of mini cards at the corner. The wired words "imagine", "create" and "hope" were all perfect for this book, so those went on too. A couple more items and the cover was complete. I love it!

In about 2 weeks, I received an email with my personalized check-in page. About 2 weeks after that I received a CD with the first 6 months of customized daily pages. Each daily page was different, so it was it's own TIF graphic file. The instructions were to print out each file on a 28-lb sheet of paper then print the check-in page on the back. I was rather disappointed since I had to open every file to print it. I would have found it more convenient for at least one week to be in one file. Better yet would be to have the check-in page AND daily pages all on the same CD. That aside, I enjoy the customized pages and liked the way the graphics are placed leaving plenty of room for writing.

I must admit that over the past month, I wasn't exactly sure how I was going to use this planner. It has been a bit of a struggle finding a place for it in my life since it was so free-form. By that I mean, there was a lot to fill-in yourself - the dates on the daily pages, the tabbed sections and the pure organization of the entire planner. Should I use it like a more traditional planner as in filling in my appointments and to-do's? Should I put just everything in there, both professional and creative life plans? Or should I focus on the crafting side of life? I have tried it all during the short time that I've had the planner and have resolved to use it for mostly my crafty side! When I decided that, it got a WHOLE lot easier!

The tabbed dividers that I have decided on are: daily (including the check-in and daily pages), contests & challenges, sketches, magazine layouts and techniques. This configuration is working SO WELL! I love participating in contest and challenges, so that section has a print-out of the guidelines for each one that I want to participate in with the due date at the top of the page. The sketches section includes original scrapbook and card sketches from the 2 main online sites I visit. The magazine layouts section has pages that I've torn out for inspiration on design or color combinations on pages. Lastly, the techniques section has ideas that I want to try in my various crafting projects. I feel that as I use this true "creative planner" more, I will be able to better schedule my crafting time and be more productive. That's the whole object right?

Although frustrated at first with the whole system, I believe that the Life Composition Creative Planner is what you make of it, literally. Nerissa and Angel Bonnie will provide the support throughout the year to inspire me to reach my "big rocks" and creative goals. I really like the emails that pop into my inbox every so often and the emails from the Creative Planner Yahoo group. Overall, the system is a fun one although loosely organized one. A tad more organization on the start-up part, like check-in and daily pages provided more quickly, would involve the newbie right away avoiding any frustration they might feel. If you're ready to be more organized about any area of your life, the Life Composition Creative Planner is a good choice. Be ready to experiment and tailor it to your needs because the flexibility is there for you to discover!

Eleanor Roosevelt said "It takes as much energy to wish as it does to plan." Like many people I have found myself wishing for more hours in the day, more shopping days before Christmas and even just wishing I was more of a "planner" and less of a procrastinator. If I would listen to Eleanor Roosevelt and stop endlessly wishing I might have more productive days. To help with that planning is Life Composition, The Creative Day Planner.

Imagine having your own personal life coach who is also a singer-songwriter and author. That is what you get with The Creative Day Planner and Nerissa Nields is the life coach. Along with Nerissa is the helpful "Angel Bonnie" who will be assisting in the inspiration and process. But what sets this planner apart from the ones I had previously bought? I was anxious to find out.

The Creative Day Planner arrived and I found that it was a dark blue 3-ring binder with "Life Composition The Creative Day Planner" stamped on the cover and many pages inside of it and a treat bag.

Life Composition, The Creative Day Planner Cover

Inside the binder were many pretty things that made me giddy with delight. The "guts", as they are referred to, included a welcome section, a 2007 monthly calendar with full color paintings, weekly exercise cards and other patterned papers. Also included was a plastic "treat" bag with lots of fun items like watercolor paints, crayons, envelopes, stickers and more.

From my first impressions, I was happy to see familiar patterned papers in the planner and I realized I could use my own stash of papers in this same way. I really liked the color paintings on the monthly calendar pages and the bag of treats was just calling out for me to use the contents in a unique way. However, I did feel like the planner itself, which is a fabric covered 3-ring binder, was not overly impressive. I also felt that the section dividers, which were printed in black and white, were not as inspiring as the other color pages in the planner. I was also concerned because the planner is the size of a regular binder and in the past I have always used planners that could fit in my purse so I was not sure how convenient this would be.

My first step to using the planner was to read the 9-page Welcome section. This section was enjoyable to read with its cute drawings and great humor. I then filled out my "menu" which is a form to list goals and priorities so that I could receive personalized Daily Check-In Sheets. I sent this back to Nerissa and started decorating my cover!

I decorated the front cover by adding patterned paper, ribbon and decorative tape. I also added a large ribbon that I could use to tie the planner closed as well as carry the planner.

Products used:
Patterned Paper (Fancy Pants)
Stamp, Decorative Paint (Heidi Swapp)
Ribbon (American Crafts)
Ink (ColorBox Fluid Chalk Inkpad)

Glue (Adhesive Tech Permanent Glue Runner)

I also decided to decorate the section dividers. I did this by turning them into scrapbooking layouts. The photos on the pages are held down with ribbon and photo turns but not glued down so that I could update my photos as I wanted to.

A few weeks later I received an email with my personalized Daily Check In page. This was "personalized" with boxes on the page being labeled with my goals and priorities from my menu. This was helpful but I was disappointed that the file I was emailed was just a black and white page whereas the generic pages that came with the planner were colored. I did receive a CD in the mail with my Daily Schedule Pages. The CD contained 26 weeks of daily pages and each page had a different graphic and quote on it. However, these pages were not personalized to me. Also, the pages had to be opened with my photo editing software because they were in a TIF format instead of JPG or PDF.

I use the time slots on the Daily Schedule pages to keep track of my family's schedule. I use the blank space to write notes from the day or a quick to-do list. The Daily Check-In page is part of my nightly routine where I can list my gratitudes, frustrations and thoughts for all my different goals and priorities. I have found the weekly exercises to be encouraging and varied.

Along with the planner I get access to a monthly online mp3 and a Yahoo Group. These are both useful but not nearly as inspiring as the Welcome section was.

I do not like to be indecisive in my reviews. I am more comfortable picking one opinion and sticking to it. However, at this time I have to say that I do like the planner but I am not certain of the "value" of the planner for everybody. I know that the planner costs $91, which includes shipping. I did find the Welcome section to be inspirational, the weekly exercises to be encouraging and the planner presents itself as an opportunity to have fun altering and for those reasons I would recommend the planner. On the other hand, I do not find the planner to be very "personalized". The planner is a large size that is not convenient to carry with me and the fact that the planner is a simple fabric 3-ring binder makes me believe that it would not be a preferred planner for people unwilling to alter.

I have enjoyed incorporating The Creative Day Planner into my life. It has helped keep me organized and has made me more aware of my daily activities and helps keep me on track with my goals. I believe that there is great potential for this planner and for Life Composition. However, I believe that like any other planner, this is only as useful as the person using it allows it to be. So like Eleanor Roosevelt advises, it is time for me to stop wishing and start planning with my Creative Day Planner.

The Life Composition Creative Day Planner was developed by Narissa Nields-Duffy, a Yale educated novelist and singer. It comes in the form of a vibrant blue linen three-ring binder, with each binder uniquely decorated for you. My binder has many different ribbons attached at the top and swaths of all different colors and sizes of paper sprinkled throughout its pages to kick start your creativity. You are encouraged to decorate and alter your Day Planner in any way you wish.

Unaltered Day Planner

The binder is broken up into five tabbed sections: vision, intentions, plans, actions and goodies. These sections are left empty for you to add your own pages and allowing you to put your own spin on these sections or recreate them altogether.

Weekly exercises are provided on full color cards which are three-hole punched on both the left and right side so that you can place them anywhere in your binder. Each exercise encourages introspection and creativity.

Also included in your binder package is a bag filled with goodies. My goodies included colored clips, crayons, watercolor paints, ribbons, stickers, a calculator, a tiny cross-stitch project, and much more. All of these items are meant to inspire creativity.

Upon receiving your binder you are asked to fill out a menu which is tucked in a pocket inside the front cover. The menu assists in identifying your big “rocks” (goals). Once the menu is completed and returned, you will receive an email providing a Daily Check-In Page listing each of your big rocks, space for a daily commitment, gratitudes, frustrations, and more.

(left to right) Daily Check-In Page, Weekly Exercise Card, Patterned Paper

About two weeks later you will receive a CD in the mail which contains your Daily Schedule Pages, one for each day of the year with customized quotes and mind-stirring graphics and open space. Each day is saved separately which makes printing a little time consuming. They also suggest printing on 28# cardstock, with the Daily Schedule Page on one side and the Check-In Page on the other. This part of the process may be especially cumbersome for those without a color printer, an ample amount of paper and, if desired, the purchase of high quality cardstock. A three-hole punch will also be needed to insert your pages into the binder. Another option would be taking the CD and Daily Check-In Page to a printing place to have it done for you.

Daily Schedule Page

To offer continual inspiration each month you will receive an e-mail containing an mp3 file from Narissa sharing an inspiring story or thought with you. This will also be available to read on her blog. Occasional “treats” throughout the year are promised to be provided by “Angel Bonnie” of Unexpected Gifts.

You are also invited to join a Yahoo group with other Creative Day Planners. The e-mails here are quite sporadic and often feel more social than inspiring or creative.

Taking the Day Planner path invites the adult side of you to create the absolute best environment for your child side. Throughout this process you will need to:
1. Know what it is you want.
2. Plan it.
3. Schedule it.
4. Take the actions, put your money where your mouth is, walk the walk and not just talk the talk.

I have been using my binder for about a month now. I struggle to get into a steady pattern of planning my days, but did discover that when I did create my own action plan for the day I accomplished much more than if I had left it unscheduled. Planning your next day right before bed seems to work well. It also gives you a chance to review your day and check your progress. Although the planner is gorgeous and certainly more creative than any other on the market, if you struggle with creating a schedule, goals or time for reflection, you will most likely face these same problems with the Creative Day Planner.

I am skeptical about the level of customization of my Day Planner. Each is certainly unique but whether or not it is tailored just for me is doubtful. The Day Planner is much larger than I expected and does make it difficult to transport. The group support seems faltering at best, with many Day Planners not participating in e-mail discussions at all. Each Day Planner is encouraged to DO IT NOW. Reach for your goals. You cannot grow if you do not take risks. I believe this self motivation has to exist in order for you to use the Day Planner successfully. The Day Planner itself gives you a unique and creative place to record your dreams and goals, but it does not motivate those who were not already motivated to make their life better.

The Creative Day Planner is a young and evolving creation with changes being made at the time of this review, which is based on the First Edition Planner. All suggestions for improvement are encouraged among all Day Planners. I believe that the Day Planner has a very successful and marketable concept, but at a price tag of $91 ($79 plus $12 shipping and handling) for the basic Day Planner, many consumers may be uncertain about making that commitment.

Review by Karen

Since becoming a stay-at-home mom, I had given up the day planner which I relied on. I began using the family wall calendar as my planner. It worked well, since I really didn’t have a need for a daily planner, but when the chance came to work with a planner that was set up for the creative type I jumped at the opportunity. The more that I thought about what a creative planner meant, the more I saw it as a cure for my needs.

While I waited for my box to arrive, I began to dream about all that I could accomplish with this planner. Soon I was waiting for a miracle in a box. I had talked myself into believing that as soon as my planner arrived that my life would change exponentially. Then my box arrived. I couldn’t wait to see my life change before my eyes. But the days drifted by and my life was, well, the same.

At first I was so excited about this planner, then I started to wonder what was wrong with it. Why wasn’t it working? Why wasn’t my life changing before my eyes? I got angry! I mean, in my mind this planner was my miracle cure, but it wasn’t working. Then I realized something. What this planner really was, and what the miracle really is: the potential of the planner holds. It’s not about the planner making things happen in my life; it’s about me using the planner’s potential to change my life.

So just what is the potential and how does it work? The planner itself is a blue three ring binder that holds 8.5" x 11" sheets. It came preloaded with five sections, each one loaded with patterned papers and starter pages. The sections are labeled: vision, intentions, plans, actions, and goodies. In the box with the planner is a menu to fill out so that Bonnie and Nerissa can help you customize your planner. Once the menu is filled out and mailed back, you receive a disk with more pages for your planner that you print at home, or in a local print shop.

The menu is one way to get you to think about the goals you want to accomplish in your life. In the menu you will read a story about how to get all the rocks in to a jar. This is a metaphor for how to accomplish the big things while also having time for the little things. The basic idea is this: to accomplish all that you want in a day you must get the most important done first, then the others will fill in the left over space. I struggled with what I wanted to be my big goals, those daily things that I wanted to be completed first. I would recommend that you make time to do this as soon as you receive your planner. These goals are easily changed as you move through the months.

In order for this planner to work for me, I needed to make it mine. I started by making circular tabs that I could write the section titles on. I have changed these several times since I first added them to the planner. The tabs currently are labeled: “page ideas”, “pages to do”, “calendar”, “blank”, and “other”. Behind the “other” tab I have added several 8.5" x 11" manila envelopes. I keep a list of due dates behind the “pages to do” tab and notebook paper behind the “page ideas” tab. I am currently using the “calendar” pages that come with the planner, but I am working to customize a page that feels more like me. I just can’t get this part of the planner to work for me, yet. There is a lot of potential here, I just need to figure out what will work best for me and accept that it could take half the year to get everything set.

One thing that I added that I really love is a “today” divider for the daily pages. I move it each night so that it is current. It has a tab at the top, while the sections are tabbed on the right. I added some flower stickers to make it “pretty”. I also love my “page idea” section. The kids are always saying or doing something that makes me want to create a page about it. Since I have started carrying the planner with me, I now use the notebook paper to keep up with what they said. I transfer this information to a note card to keep on my scrap desk. I really like that I added this section to my planner. I have thought about turning the blank section into an inspiration section where I can collect and keep items for later.

I have embraced the idea that this planner is more about potential than miracles. It’s about how I use it, and that is more than likely very different than how you will use yours. In the original kit there are all kids of goodies (watercolor paints, crayons, etc) which are meant to spark your creativity. Again this bag of goodies shows the potential just waiting for the artist’s hand. This planner is meant to be altered into something that works for you, it’s a spring board for helping you accomplish the most important things in your life.

I love the coaching that you get from the team through the Yahoo group and blog. It’s not like a personal trainer who yells and forces you to do something. It’s more like a muse who whispers into your soul, pointing you in one direction and then another. I have found myself looking forward to sitting down with my planner. It’s made a change in me—not really the one that I expected, and defiantly not the life changing over-night miracle I had talked myself into. The change is more about believing in potential, both mine and what the planner has. This planner is definitely not your average planner, and I look forward to using it this year.

NOTE: It is perhaps unfair to spend only a month with a planner that is expected to assist on the entire year's journey. Because of this, we have set up a place in the Office Forum for continued discussion of the planner thoughout the year. We will inform you of our "goodie packages" when they arrive from Bonnie too. Stay tuned and feel free to join in!
