In June 2008 I had the privilege of not only meeting, but also working with this fabulous husband and wife team, Janelle Kelso Marshall and Jim Marshall, owners of PK Glitz!
Their products are amazingly beautiful and it is fun to watch these two individuals as they demonstrate their products to hundreds of customers who gather around at consumer shows.
I introduce to you Janelle Kelso Marshall of PK Glitz:
How did you decide to start the Powder Keg business?
“In 2004 I married Jim Marshall and moved from my home in Las Vegas, NV to St. Augustine, Florida. There I began teaching paper arts full time. I used Powder Keg embossing powder while living in Las Vegas and was aware of the superb quality of the product. In 2005 Jim and I had the opportunity to buy the company and from their added many new products.”
Why did you change the name from Powder Keg to PK Glitz?
“We changed the name for several reasons. We added several items to our line such as Ultra Fine Art Glitter, Embossable Glitters (Twilights and Stardust), Ritzy Ditzy Glitz, Sticky Paper and Tapes, etc. and because we were more than just "embossing powders", we wanted a name that would encompass all of our products. Also it's a much shorter website address www.PKGlitz.com and then the final decision came when, after 9/11's growing security awareness, I was at the post office trying to mail a package to Canada and the postal clerk didn't know the difference between embossing powder and explosive powder. I had a terrible time getting that package in the mail.”
What sets your products apart from the rest of glitters and embossing powder that are on the market?
“To begin with our embossing powders and art glitters are made from the highest quality base ingredients. Then we hand blend to get the luscious tapestry colors you see. We recently added Embossable glitters, Twilights and Stardust, and all are blended by the same recipes so that they can be used together for a perfect mix or compliment.”
Ritzy Ditzy Glitz is such a glamorous name. Can you tell me a little bit about this product?
“RDG is an instant shimmer spray for medium to dark colored card stocks or other matt surfaces. When we say instant dry, that's just what it is, no waiting and you get a dazzling finish. Recently some of our Scrapbook stores have been using it on their silk petals with gorgeous results.”
How do you decide what new colors you want to add to your line of Glitter Glitz?
“Our colors are added by customer request and seasonal fashion. Our motto is "For Today's Art and Artist".”
Do you personally oversee the production of all of your products?
“YES, in fact I participate in the production of all of our products. We do have some amazing helpers now but I'm still a very "hands on" manufacturer.”
You have some amazing projects in your website gallery. How can I learn to use my embossing powders and glitters like you show in your gallery?
“There are a number of ways to learn our techniques. First is on our website, under "Techniques". Next, many fine stores carry our products and often have classes on our techniques. Check our website "Stores" and call one near you to see when their next class will be. Thirdly, we teach at many Stamp/Scrapbook stores across the United States and in Canada as we travel. You can ask your local store to contact us. And, beginning this year, we are sponsoring Retreats at our shop/home in Rocky Hill, KY.”
I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Great American Scrapbook Convention in Arlington, TX, do you attend other shows?
“We participate in about 26 shows a year. Our website has our 2009 Calendar posted.”
Do you hold any special retreats or seminars during the year? You also have a website called "A Paper Garden". Can you tell me a little about it? Thank you Janelle for taking the time to visit with me. See P K Glitz work in our gallery.
“Yes, in fact we just finished our first Rocky Hill Art Retreat in September. There were 36 students in attendance and all had a wonderful time. Our home is a 150 year old Rail Road Inn set in the country and it is an inspiring setting for retreats. Info and pictures are posted on our website.
“A Paper Garden was my initial website when I was teaching in Las Vegas. It was a great way to get the word/gallery out before "blogging" became so popular. Now, I'm afraid I don't have as much time for it and simply try to keep www.PKGlitz.com current.”
