Review by MelanieCaptured Elements is a new company that offers a unique line of sports themed papers for scrapbooking or altered art. The designer, Stephanie McAtee, was inspired to create a line of papers from her son’s involvement in sports. The name of the line is “160/44-8", representing important numbers in her son’s sports involvement. She personally tested the papers with dyes, ink, and other altered techniques to ensure the versatility of her product. Four styles of papers make up the 160/44-8 line: Definitions, Words, Numbers and Collage. I received papers from the sports definition and numbers line. The Sports Definition paper is 12" x 12" with sports terms and definitions in black and white. One paper is white with black words, and the other side is white with black words. Themes include hunting, fishing, cheerleading, swimming, gymnastics, running, soccer, just to name a few. The number papers, also 12" x 12", look like spray painted or sponge painted number stencils. They can be used to create scores, jersey numbers, or anything you can imagine. Some of the number papers are black with white letters, while some are white with black letters, while one line has red letters.
My first creations were with the hunting and fishing line. I scrapped my pages similarly so they will coordinate as a 2-page spread. I used vintage fishing photos of my mother and the other page is vintage hunting photos of my father. I used the white background words paper, and altered the color of the paper with chalk. I trimmed related words and definitions and used the sports definition at the top of each of the pages.

I used the gymnastics words paper with photos of my daughter with her first gymnastics teacher. I used chalk to highlight some of the words, and I inked the edges of the paper with blue, and used some of the ink to casually distress the surface.

Review by Lynn AnneSports Definitions paper by Captured Elements is exactly what its name implies – paper patterned with definitions of individual sports and of words related to each sport. Each sport seems to have its own font and its own definitions, but other than that the patterns are very similar. On one side, a black background with white text. On the other side, white paper with black text. Many standard sports are included, along with some less-thought-of areas such as band, cheerleading and hunting.
On their website, Captured Elements refers to their paper themes as including ‘your favorite sports.’ I looked several times for my favorite sport – bowling! - but so far, no offering. Considering immense collection of bowling photos from several generations, I sure hope it gets added to the selection soon! In the meanwhile, though, I was able to work with papers from several other favorite sports, including baseball, softball, volleyball, and basketball.
An attractive paper in its own right, I had no hesitation about using an entire sheet of Basketball Defined with this monochromatic layout about a local basketball hero (and alumnus) that I met as a photographer for my high school newspaper. While not a cardstock-weight paper, it easily supported a number of photographs along with a sprinkling of light embellishments.

I loved that the patterns on either side of the paper were identical save for the colors, basically making them negative images of each other. I had fun lining up the black and white sides of the Softball Defined paper for this friendship card, highlighting the word “comradery.”

For a layout about my high school volleyball jacket, I used bits and pieces of the paper throughout the layout, and loved the effect it had of brightening the page and making it more visually interesting. And, of course, the definitions were perfectly suited to the subject.

Although I enjoyed working with the black and white Sports Definitions papers, they accept altering as well. For this layout, I used a simple distressing ink to change the white to Antique Linen.

The words defined on Sports Definitions papers range from informative (“setter”) to encouraging (“victory”) to heartwarming (“fan”, “comradery”). The designs are attractive and versatile, and the black and white colors lend themselves to many uses as-is, and even more when color altered. The paper is of a high quality, and is available in fifteen popular-to-scrap sports. If you’ve any kind of sports layouts that fit with any of the Captured Elements themes, you couldn’t go wrong adding some Sports Definitions to your pages.
Review by CatherineCaptured Elements is an emerging scrapbook company that focuses mainly on sports themed papers. Designed by artist Stephanie McAtee, these papers are said to have been tested personally by Stephanie, to be assured that they are alterable and versatile for any number of crafts. The Captured Elements papers are listed in the categories of Sports Definition papers, Sports Collage papers, Numbers papers, and Word Papers. Many of the papers in the Captured Elements lines have a very cutting edge, “grunge” feel to them, and I believe they would work well with any type of sports layout, from amateur to professional sports. The majority of the papers I received in my package were Sports Definition papers. I had previously seen the other lines of papers, and was very impressed with them. I had not seen the Sports Definitions papers, so I was interested in seeing how I could use them.
The Captured Elements Sports Definitions papers are double sided papers, printed in both black and white. The papers contain definitions and information about the sport they address. The themes for the Sports Definitions papers include band, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, fishing, football, fishing, football, hunting, soccer, softball, swimming, theatre, track, volleyball, and wrestling. Making it easy for any scrapbooker to find the theme they want to use. I personally received papers for cheerleading, baseball, track, and swimming. I also received one of the Sports Numbers papers.
I asked for the Captured Elements Cheerleading paper so that I could scrap some pictures from high school. Once started on my high school album, I am determined to finish it. The black and white definitions papers were perfect for the orange, white, and black of my high school colors. After layering pieces of the two sides of paper onto cardstock, I simply added a couple of charms to the page to create a simple, but sophisticated looking layout.

In my next layout, I decided to try combining the black and white definitions papers with a number of different colors. I love the bright, fun colors in these pictures of my oldest son swimming, and decided to try to mimic them in my layout. I used Scrapbook Colors paint on the edges of the paper, and under part of the title. The white paint shows very well against the black of the patterened papers.

I originally asked for the Track and Field Definitions papers, believing that I had pictures from high school of running track. Our relay team took fourth in state during our junior year. I searched for the pictures that I thought we had, but was never able to find them. I decided to use a picture of my track cleats, along with hidden journaling about the lost photos to complete my layout. The Track and Field papers, along with the Sports Numbers papers were a perfect combination for this photo. I particularly like the look of the Numbers papers, which look like spray painted stencil letters to me. The grungy, weathered look to the Captured Elements papers lines that I did not receive appeal to the “shabby” scrapper inside.

The last layout that I completed with these papers is by far my favorite. I decided to layer the opposite sides of the paper, and tear and ink the edges. These photos of my son playing catcher this summer are a perfect complement to these papers, in my opinion. I love the look of the black and white papers with black and white photos.

In review, I would have to say that I really enjoyed working with the Captured Elements papers. These papers are very versatile and easy to use, and the fact that these papers can now be ordered directly from the Captured Elements website make them easily accessible. I would suggest that scrappers run out and purchase Captured Elements sports themed papers for any sports layout needs.
Review by EliCaptured Elements has such an extensive line of themes available that I was excited to check out their offerings. I received several sheets of paper, including Football and Cheerleading Defined and a Sports Collage. The paper is a nice weight and the images are clear and well crafted.
To begin, I finally had something to show off some of my cheerleading. I created a page highlighting the time when I was applying to work for a cheerleading summer camp. I hired a photographer who took these shots. The interesting thing about the Defined papers is that they are negative images on opposite sides. As you can see in this page, one side is black with white printing and the other side is white with black printing. I liked the options that gave for creating

Review by TamiCaptured Elements—Capturing Versatility
For this review I was supplied with for sheets of paper from the company Captured Elements. The themes I chose to work with were hunting, fishing, and gymnastics. I also received a sheet of red stencil numbers. At first I thought these papers were rather plain looking with simple fonts and little color. I began to gather my ideas for projects and suddenly came to a different conclusion. As you will see, there is more to them than they first appear.
My first project is the hunting theme. To incorporate the colors of the photo I used an antiquing spray to turn the white side of the paper brown. That is the great part about these papers being so neutral, you can tailor the look to fit your layout. Also note how well the “Colorado 1997” font matches the paper. I realized I liked the simple font because is easy to match with both rub-on letters and computer fonts.

Rub-on Letters: Making Memories

My next project was for the fishing line. I used the white side for this page as well. This time to customize the paper I used Craf-T glimmer chalks to highlight some of the words. Also don’t limit yourself to using it just as a background or think you have to use a whole sheet on one layout. Notice how I cut the words “attract” and “catch” from the black side of the paper.

I have had gymnastics photos that I have put off doing for over 5 years. I found the gymnastics themed paper a perfect match in both theme and color to match my daughters outfit so I used it to create the first page. I will eventually follow with other gymnastics themed pages. I left the paper as is but this time used the black side.

The number papers from captured Elements can also be very versatile. They can be used for much more than just sports. I chose to use the number 4 to make a quick and easy card. These could also be used for dates, ages and more. In addition to using the 4 as “for”, you can substitute the 8 and make it GR8 or the 2 as the word “to”.

With a wide variety of topics Captured Elements is sure to have something for everyone. As you can clearly see this line is very versatile and can be easily customized for your particular project. Recommended.
Review by KateCaptured Elements offers a fun, funky selection of papers for nearly every extra-curricular activity imaginable. In several different styles and fonts, the papers, which are mostly text, these papers provide a pattern that is easily transl ated to both masculine or feminine designs.
For this review, I was sent a sample of the "Band Defined" paper, the "Softball Defined" paper and the "White Numbers on Black" paper. I instantly loved the contrast between the black & white, and I knew that these papers would make fo r stunning projects.
My first project was a "scorebook" altered composition book. I come from a long line of big baseball and softball fans, and scorekeeping is something I picked up from my mother - I'd much rather watch and keep score than play, myself. So, here it is - my "scorebook":

My second project was a layout recalling my good ol' highschool days. Band took up a lot of my time in highschool, but unfortunately, I only have a few pictures left from those days. I knew this layout had to be visually interesting, while still allowing me to showcase minimal photos, and just a little journaling. The reversible "Band Defined" patterned paper was perfect for this.

I loved working with this paper because of it's versatility. Using a lot, or using a little, it really gave my projects some punch. My favorite thing, though, is that it works great for either masculine or feminine projects, and that's a t ough challenge for many of today's patterned papers. I'd highly recommend this product, and I'm sure you'll love it too.
