Ever go to do a sports layout and find you don't have the right shades of paper to match? Captured Elements has solved that problem for you with this line of primarily color neutral papers. They come in "definitions," "numbers," "collage," and "words," with most of them being black and white. Captured Elements is fairly new on the scrapbooking scene, having made its debut in April of 2005. The founder and designer, Stephanie McAtee, has plans to expand beyond sports themes in the future.

The "Sports Definition" paper is white with black letters on one side and black with white letters on the other side, allowing you to vary the look. I cut the numbers one and two from the "Black Stencil Numbers" sheet to make the number 12, which is my son's number on the team. I inked and embossed the edges. I also stamped and embossed the basketball on leather looking paper.

Products used: Black Stencil Numbers paper, Captured Elements
Basketball Defined paper, Captured Elements

Mats behind photos also Leather Journal from Sticker Studio
Tim Holtz Black Soot Distress Ink, Ranger
Black Embossing Powder, Fun Stamps
Black mini brads, Karen Foster Design

The next layout uses portions of the "Basketball Defined" sheet and the "Play the Game" sheet. I found that the word "ball" didn't appear on the "Play the Game" sheet in the size I needed, so I simply cut the letters out of some other words that I didn't intend to use. I also cut strips of the lighter paper from the "Play the Game" sheet and edged areas of the layout with it.

On my "Pep Band" layout, I used bookplates to highlight the words "band" and "music" within the paper.

Why limit yourself to sports layouts? There are LOTS of things that use numbers in everyday life. This layout about my youngest daughter counting M & M's is one example.

Products used: White Number on Black paper, Captured Elements
"m" stamp, Stampisations
ink: Colorbox, PageCraft, Anna Griffin
Twill, FBTY
cardstock, DMD
M & M characters cut from Roseart Flashcards

I found these papers easy to work with, they took altering, embossing and distressing well, and the double-sided options really opened the possibilities of variations. I liked these a lot and can't wait to see what they release next.

Sports themed layouts start looking the same after awhile: same colors, same patterns and the same designs. That cycle has been broken with Captured Elements patterned sports papers.

The paper has a good weight allowing for layering and matting of other embellishments and photos. The Sports Definition Paper is double-sided in black and white. Each side is color reversed for design flexibility. Every definition paper offers its own font which adds to the differentiation between the sports, especially useful when creating a whole scrapbook with a sports theme. The Sports Collage Paper offers color and a collage style of old newspaper articles and yearbook photos. The Numbers Paper has stenciled numbers all over the page in black, white or red and in various sizes. The Words Paper has a grunge look to it with sports themed words all over the paper.

There is a more "adult" feel to the papers due to the color schemes and fonts used in my opinion. The way that the fonts are pictured on the paper offers a unique touch. Whether it's a spray paint look or sponged-on kind of look, the end result is a welcome one. I was impressed with the double-sided definition paper because it offered more flexibility than other papers. I was anxious to start scrapping some photos that I had in my stash for quite awhile!

The Wrestling Defined paper has a great grunge-type font for the text. The definitions are clear and easy to read in both the black on white and white on black. I used one of my favorite color combinations of white, black and red to complete the layout. I used a monogram in white to emphasize the wrestling theme and cut out a reverse colored word "wrestler" from the remaining patterned paper to attach to the monogram. Some mesh and brads finished the masculine feel to the layout.

Adhesive (Adhesive Tech, Permanent Glue Runner)

This was a fun layout to use the Baseball Defined paper on! I carried the round theme throughout the layout with the definition paper making the perfect addition. The font for this paper is larger and more of a block design than the wrestling paper. I used the reverse white on black as corner accents to a couple pictures and for matting some of the tags. I went with a base of red color to match the uniforms for the home team and bright summer day. The hunter green mat tag was for the Harvard heritage!

I found the Soccer Defined paper to be the most bold font of the three. It is a block type font and larger than the other two defined papers that I received. I loved the shade of blue for the background paper which matched some of the colors in the trading cards. The cards along the side have statistics on the back, so I used photo corners for easy removal. The grass photo paper added some texture to the layout while coordinating to the theme. A bit of stamping for the name and age and it was complete!

The Athletic Mentality paper really caught my eye with its colors and aged look. The variety of large and small words in a stencil font was perfect for a sports theme. I matched some of the Prismatic cardstock perfectly to the colors to provide a solid color accent. The yellow cardstock was aged a little with chalk ink to soften the color and to coordinate with the patterned paper. I trimmed the words that I wanted for the layout from the sheet of the Athletic Mentality paper then added the specific details with stamps. This layout came together very quickly by just adding a little mesh.

Products used: Paper (Prism Prismatics, Sunflowers Medium, Spring Willow Medium, Black)
Patterned Paper (Captured Elements, Athletic Mentality)
Mesh (Magic Mesh, 12" x 12" Fine Weave Black)
Ink (Colorbox Fluid Chalk, Dark Moss and Tsukineko Brilliance, Graphite Black)
Stamps (Brenda Walton)
Adhesive (Adhesive Tech, Permanent Glue Runner)

I found the versatility of the "Defined" papers very useful. Having the option of the white on black or black on white on one sheet made it easy for the layout to come together quickly. The standard black and white color scheme also allowed any color to be used for coordination and accenting. The Athletic Mentality paper has the nice feature of large words that are easy to use for accents and titles. The colors are also very good and can be used for any sport. I believe that any sport themed layout would be easy to design using Captured Elements papers. JUST DO IT!

We received some patterned paper from a new company called Captured Elements. The owner, Stephanie McAtee designed a sports themed line called “160/44-8” due to her son’s participation in sports. She has created four different lines of paper. Those lines are Numbers, Collages, Definitions, and Words. I received one sheet of the Wrestling Defined and one sheet of the Hunting Defined. The Definition line is double sided. It is black with white words on one side and white with black words on the other side. It is printed with lots of definitions and information about any kind of sports activity or themed activity. The themes included in this line are football, gymnastics, hunting, band, baseball, cheerleading, fishing, football, soccer, softball, swimming, theatre, track and field, wrestling, and volleyball. These papers retail for about $.75 a sheet. It looks like this paper comes in only 12" x 12".

This patterned paper is a light weight paper and is quite versatile. I used the hunting paper to show off my brother’s first deer. I left the journaling box blank so that he can write the story.

On the following layout I used the Wrestling Defined paper. I didn’t use this in the traditional sports way though. I used the Wrestling Defined to document a favorite play time activity of my husband and daughter.

In conclusion, I really like this collection. I do wish it came in different colors beside just black and white. I would love to have our favorite team colors. I do, however, recommend this paper for sports fans of all types. Sports themed papers are sometimes hard to find and these papers will be great for your sports themed albums or layouts.

Captured Elements has a line of definition paper for a large number of subjects including: sports, band, cheer leading and theater. The front of the paper is printed in black on a white background, the reverse i s white printing on a black background. Captured Elements uses a different font and font size for each design.

Most of us have a large amount of sports photos and like to create unique pages. With the Captured Elements line, it is possible to create many different looks with the same paper. My first project is a la yout of my daughter's basketball team. I used the "Basketball Defined" paper and colored a few select words or phrases with a marker. The result is a very unique and easy background.

The next project utilizes the Hunting Defined paper (black background) colored in with a marker and used as a border.

Soccer balls are usually black and white. I used the black and white paper for a border and as mini tags in the soccer layout.

Captured Elements also has a Sports Collage Paper Line. In the swim layout below I used the Sports Definition Paper and the Sports Collage Paper. The Sports Art Paper is a vintage looking, with faux aged paint.

Captured Elements has definitely found a unique market niche. The two sided definition paper can be easily incorporated into scrapbooking, card making or paper crafting projects. In utilizing the paper, I prefer the smaller font paper. The large font is easy to use but competes with the photographs on the paper. Both the Sports definition paper and Sports Collage papers are easy to use and perfect for most sports related photos.

I received a sampling of sports papers from Captured Elements, and not being very sport oriented myself, I was pleasantly surprised to see these papers. My experience with “sport” papers tends to allow only a narrow focus or color choice when creating a layout. The papers from Captured Elements, however, are much more versatile.

I worked with papers from the topics: fishing, swimming, and baseball. These papers are double sided and have all types of definitions pertaining to the subject. One side is black with the definitions in white. The other side is white with the definitions in black. I also worked with a collage style sport paper. This paper is features “old time” photos, newspaper clippings, and ticket stubs.

Following are the projects I created using the papers from Captured Elements. For more fabulous layouts created by the Scrapfriends Review Teams, please visit the Captured Elements in the gallery.

The following layout uses the Baseball Defined paper. I chose the black side and using the computer, turned my photos into black and white with the exception of my son’s red hat. I know he’s not playing baseball or anything, but these photos were taken at a local park and we were watching a baseball game.

Micron: black, red journaling pens
Kathleen Campos: filmstrip, photographs

Paint Shop Pro 5: computer software

The next layout shows pictures of my son “swimming” in a little pool. He had been in larger pools before, but during our camping trip, he liked to “swim” in the small pool. He really started getting the hang of blowing bubbles and kicking his feet. I used the Swimming Defined paper and since I could not decide on a black or white background, I used both! I took two large squares from one sheet of paper and stitched each one onto my background cardstock using contrasting sewing thread.

Prism: Exclusives Papers
Micron: black journaling pen
Zig: blue pen
Adhesive Tech: Glue Runner
Other: ribbon, sewing thread

The third layout is pictures of me fishing while camping. I love fishing and especially enjoyed this catch since it happened in the first 10 minutes on the water. The paper I used for this layout is the Fishing Defined. I chose to use the white background and then lightly aged it a bit with Tim Holtz Distressing Ink. I wanted to give it that dirty, camping feel.

Title: Fish On
Products used: Captured Elements: Fishing Defined patterned paper
Prism: Prismatics cardstock
Provo Craft: patterned papers (green)
Ranger: Distress Ink
Micron: black pen
Making Memories: rub on letters
Other: sewing thread
Adhesive Tech: Glue Runner

The following card is my first real attempt at the collage style. The Sport Collage paper just called for it. I love the soft, vintage look and the colors on this paper.

Title: Collage Style Card
Products used: Captured Elements: Sport Collage patterned paper
Prism: Prismatics cardstock
Ranger: Distress Ink
Diecuts With A View: vellum quote
Making Memories: spiral clips, square brads
Karen Foster Design: bingo card
Judikins: Diamond Glaze
Other: jute, crackle stamp, staples, mulberry paper
Adhesive Tech: Glue Runner

In summary, I enjoyed working with the papers. I like the fact that I could choose a white base or a black base (or both!) with the definitions papers. The black and white color scheme does not hinder you from using any specific color or photographs you want. I also like the Sport Collage paper. This paper gives you a more vintage or collage look and is already distressed for you. If you have sports photographs, (or ‘near sports’ like my photos!), I think you will enjoy working with these papers from Captured Elements.
