The user's manual for the Embossing and Die Cutting System reads somewhat like a cookbook with various "sandwich" recipes. The basic cutting “sandwich” is made like this:

First place the Spacer Plate on top of the Emboss Mat as the bottom of the “sandwich.”

Place the Spellbinders Embossing & Cutting Die onto the Spacer Plate, cutting side up.

Place your paper on top of the die.

Then add the Master Cut Mat on top of the paper as the final layer on your “sandwich.” Feed it through the machine with a ratchet-type action.
