How to Set an Eyelet

Supplies Needed:
* Craft Mat made for setting eyelets or other hard mat
* eyelet(s) in desired color(s)
* hole punch (shown as the top silver tool on the mat - has a groove in for removing the paper)
* eyelet setter (shown as the silver tool lying beside the hammer)
* small hammer

OR

* a grommet aka eyelet setter or silent eyelet setter (these require no banging of the hammer) (shown in supply picture is an old grommet setter) (lying to the right side of the mat)

Begin by placing your paper onto the mat and using your hole punch and hammer, tap the hammer onto the top of the hole punch to make a hole in the paper.

Next, place your eyelet into the hole with color side facing up. Hold onto the eyelet while you turn the paper over to show the protruding backside of the eyelet.

Lay your paper with the eyelet face down on the mat. Using the setter, take your hammer and tap the top of the setter a couple of times gently to splay the backside of the eyelet out. That's it, you just set an eyelet.

Now if you do happen to have an grommet setter on hand, it's much quieter and quicker to set an eyelet. Simply make a hole in you paper. You can use a safety pin or needle to poke a couple of holes in your paper (all in the same spot to form a hole) just big enough to poke your eyelet through. Then using the grommet setter, line your eyelet up so that the protruding part of the eyelet is sticking onto the needlelike tip that is inside the grommet setter and the colored part of your eyelet is resting on the flat surface (opposite side of the setter).

Then simply squeeze the handle and set the eyelet. Quieter and quicker. Easy to set eyelets when you scrap at night and don't want to wake the your household members banging with the hammer and eyelet tools (setter and hole punch).

Here's the finished layout wherein I set eyelets on then strung fiber through the holes.
