Fabric Tags

If you are like me, you probably have a whole bunch of fabric scraps at home from other projects. The question is are they safe for scrapbooks? How can you make them a little stiffer so that you can cut the fabric or work with it more easily? Fabric can look fantastic. Most fabric tags are cut from cotton fabric. Cotton is safe for scrapbooks. Fabric is thin, floppy and is much easier to work with if it is stiffened with a fabric stiffener. The advantage of working with fabric is it adds another dimension to scrap booking or card making. The following is a step by step instruction to working with fabric stiffener and then some examples of fabric tags.
Supply List
Fabric Stiffener- I used Fabric Stiffener from Fiber's by The Yard;
(most fabric stores have this...but you may want to check and make sure it is acid free)
Fabric and Tag Template or Fabric Tag (Fiber's by the Yard)
Waxed Paper
Foam Brush
1. Prepare the Fabric (skip this step if you purchased a precut fabric tag) If you purchased fabric from a fabric store, make sure you wash it and do not add fabric softener. Dry it in the dryer and iron it if necessary. Cut Tag.
2. Adding the Fabric Stiffener: Lay fabric reverse side down on waxed paper. Apply fabric stiffener with foam brush. FBTY fabric stiffener will dry clear.
The following tags were made using Fabric Tags:
Example #1 is an Irish Dancer Tag made with a green fabric tag (FBTY), Fibers by the Yard (Fabric Stiffener), green cross-grain ribbon, Jolee's Boutique Stickers (Destination Ireland) , Dress it Up-shamrock buttons and Basic Grey Motifica Fibers. Buttons were sewn on with thread.
Example #2 is a Wedding Tag: made with a black fabric tag (FBTY), Fibers by the Yard (Fabric Stiffener), Sandylion Stickers- Bride, Fibers by the Yard (white fibers), Offray silver ribbon. Lasting Impressions- Pink Mini Matte Brads. )
Example #3 is a Wedding Tag(The Groom) that is made with a grey fabric tag (FBTY), Fiber's by the Yard Fabric Stiffener, Sandylion Stickers- Groom, Fibers by The Yard (Black Twill), Offray silver ribbon.
I hope you will give fabric tags a try. Post a note in the forum when you post a creation with a fabric tag.
