Bottle Cap Christmas Tree Canvas
by Chris Chapman

If you’re like me, you’ve got a stash of bottle caps, scraps of Christmas paper and odds and ends of Christmas embellishments laying around. All you need to add is a canvas, some paint, some dimensional adhesive and a little creativity and you’ll have a cute Christmas decoration.

You’ll need:

Punch 11 circles from your patterned paper. The circles should be a size that will fit inside your bottle caps. I used the readily-available "soda bottle" size caps. There also are larger bottle caps available, for which you’ll need a bigger canvas. Once your circles are punched, place them inside the bottle caps with a small bit of adhesive to hold them in place. Then cover the paper with dimensional adhesive. You can fill the cap as full as you want, just remember drying time. I only put a thin coating over the paper to seal it in, because I wanted room inside the cap for additional embellishments.

Set the caps aside to dry. This may take overnight – do not rush it. You will know they’re dry when the adhesive is totally clear. If you test them with your finger and they’re not dry, you’ll have a fingerprint in your finish. Trust me on that.

While the caps are drying, paint your canvas. I chose a green metallic paint to give my finished project a little shine. While the paint was still wet, I stamped with a dry, swirl-image stamp. This worked as a "resist" and removed some of the paint. You can also wait until the canvas is dry and stamp with a coordinating ink. Or, you may decide not to stamp on your canvas.

After your bottle caps are completely dry, add embellishments to them as you wish. I used rub-ons, 3-D stickers, beads, glitter, clear stickers, and a metal snowflake charm.

Once you have completed embellishing your bottle caps, arrange them on your canvas and adhere. I used hot-melt glue. Any strong adhesive that will stick to metal and a painted surface will work.

Embellish your canvas as desired.

I added some embroidered snowflakes, a few present stickers and a ribbon trim around the outside edge of my canvas to finish it off.

Products used:
Patterned paper (Basic Grey, Blitzen and Dasher)
Dimensional Adhesive (Ranger, Glossy Accents)
3-D Stickers (Mary Engelbreit)
Stickers (Sandylion, Miss Elizabeth)
Rub-ons (Making Memories)
Charm (Making Memories)
Paint (Delta)
Bottle Caps (unknown)
Embroidered Snowflakes (Hirschberg Schutz)
Adhesive (Adhesive Tech, Project Pro High Temp Glue Gun with Ultimate Glue)

Variations: Replace some of the patterned papers with punched photos or use buttons inside the bottle caps. Really, the sky’s the limit.

Have fun with this and I look forward to seeing your take on this cute project.
