Altering a Composition Journal

How to make your own journal using an ordinary composition book!

Supplies needed:

*A standard composition book (normally under $1) Dollar Tree usually has them for 2/$1.00
*Double sided tape
*4 sheets of coordinating 8.5x11 paper/cardstock or 12x12 (some will be left over)
*Glass mat (I used an old 8x10 picture frame glass and just removed the glass and taped the edges until I bought my glass mat.)
*Exacto knife
*embellishments of your choice (ribbon, MM frames, charms, buttons, etc.)

What do you use them for?

This is a very low cost project! They can be used to document your family events and day to day happenings so that journaling on a layout is much easier because you don’t have to tap into your memory back so far. You can use them for personal journals, draw and document ideas for layouts, etc.. The options are endless. Kids can even use them to practice writing or math problems. I gave my nephew one because he hated to write but he wanted to write right away in a special journal.

Now for the steps to complete your own journal!

1. Take your blank composition book and run tape on all four sides of the front, as close to the edge as possible without the tape hanging over the edge. Run the tape right up against the binding but try not to get tape on the binding. Utilize the binding since it’s already there. If you want to change the color of the binding you could paint it with acrylic paint or use colored masking tape.

**this picture shows tape running along all 4 sides.

2. Chose which paper or cardstock you’d like on the front cover. Personally, I like to use patterned paper on the front and cardstock on the inside, but you can use wall paper, cardstock or even fabric. If you were to use fabric, I’d suggest using spray adhesive instead of double sided tape).

3. Next, take the adhesive covering off the tape on the binder side. You’ll tack down the binding side first. Line up your paper the way you’d like it to be on the book and press your edge onto the exposed adhesive.

** Here you can see that I've only taken off the tape protector on the binding side.

4. Then continue with removing the adhesive covering ONE side at a time while smoothing the paper. 5. Next, get your glass mat, then open the book cover so the face of your book is against the glass. You’ll be looking at some ugly metric stuff and the back of your paper at this point.

6. Use your exacto knife (holding it as straight up as possible) and trim off the edges by using the book edge to guide your knife for a close trim. See photo above

7. Next, you’ll cover the inside of the book with cardstock (or another coordinating paper). No one wants to look at metric conversions when they open the book. You’ll follow the same steps as above. Attach double sided tape to the binding edge first, then all 3 sides and trim off excess with exacto knife.

8. You’ll continue these steps on the back of the book and the inside of the back as well (more ugly metric conversions are back there too) 9. Then you can run ribbon down the seam of the binding if you like or leave it plain. Let your imagination go and have fun! 10. Then embellish with a name, sticker letters, computer generated title, charms, etc.. I have attached a few samples to use for ideas.

These two were made by a friend of mine!
