I enjoy creating with Dove of the East products because they are so unique and really encourage me to break out of my box when creating. Doveen, the creator of Dove of the East, refers to her travels and worldly trinket collections to inspire her new designs for all her collections. One of her logos, which I love, is simply, "Put a little foreign accent on your projects for a touch of exotic elegance". She recently added the new Linen & Lace collection to her already engaging product line, and I have since been looking forward to reviewing it!

For this review I received two of each of the six beautiful papers in the Linen & Lace Collection, one package of the Foreign Accents Flocked Lace Stickers, one package of Russia Journey Foreign Accents Clear Stamps, and a yard of Honey Lace. All of the Linen & Lace patterned papers are 12"x12", acid free, and are heavy in weight. Each sheet has a beautiful design on the front, a white back, and a bar code at the bottom that lists the specific collection, the name of the paper, and provides the dove of the east website address. The paper pulp is actually derived from commercially managed forest and is elemental chlorine free. The colors in this collection are very soft and elegant. There are a variety of blues, purples, pinks, yellows, and creams and together they have a somewhat shabby chic feel to them. The patterns in this collection include lots of intricate lace detail, flowers, cherubs, crocheted designs, and even an ornate tea pot. A couple of the papers have elaborate frame designs that look great as is or can easily be cut out and used as an embellishment. The foreign accents flocked lace stickers are gorgeous and come in a 5"x12" package that has a unique description of what the Russia Journey collection is all about. There are four 12" flocked sticker strips, each one a different pretty lace pattern, and they all have adhesive on the back. The sticker strips are cut so that you can actually pull them apart from one another without having to remove the back revealing the adhesive. This allows you to lay your lace sticker on a project and move it around until you are ready to stick it on. What's really cool about this, is it also allows you to easily use the leftover negative flocked paper area around your sticker strip as a sticker itself! The foreign accents clear stamps come in a 7.25" by 4" see thru package and have 13 different exotic images that include decorative flowers, frames, corner designs, and small images that resemble charms. They are easy to pull off from the transparent sheet they reside on, and work beautifully with a variety of ink pads. The yard of Honey Lace I received was absolutely striking! It wasn't' until I took it out of it's pretty little blue organza bag that I realized how lovely the color of the lace was. It was an exquisite shade of pale yellow and the width of the lace was approximately an inch and half so I could instantly see it being used for a variety of projects. For this review I used it as a page embellishment on a layout, however I would love to make a bracelet or hair trimming with it as well.

Every Christmas my family receives a box of smoked salmon from our relatives in Alaska and every year I make sure to hold on to the box so I can alter it later for another use. I decided the Dove of the East Linen & Lace collection would be perfect to decorate one of these and I turned it into an art box. I started by painting the whole box with a metallic pink paint and then cut up the Afternoon Sunlight paper into 4 sections and adhered them to the box lid. I added a few gold garland flowers on the sides and also trimmed 2 pieces of the leftover negative space on the flocked lace stickers sheet and used them as trim. I used one of the Russia journey clear stamps with a metallic gold ink to decorate the white chipboard bird, and then added some jewels and a rub on and placed it in the middle of the box over a painted chipboard flourish.

For my second project I wanted to use several of the papers together, so I cut different size squares from Olga's Dream, Samovar Garden, Anastasia, and Blue Room and placed them randomly behind my two pictures. I loved the way the colors looked with the black and white photos and the overall feminine look they provided when combined with each other. I used a couple of the foreign accents clear stamps with a metallic silver ink to decorate around the edges of the papers and also to connect the two photos. I created the lace ribbon decoration by placing mini glue dots in between ruffle layers. To complete the layout I added some journaling, rub ons, and used my fingers to spread silver glitter glue all over the page.

As soon as I saw the Map of My Heart paper, I knew I wanted to trim around the lace doilies pattern to create an oversize frame for my page. After cutting the first lace frame out, I decided to cut out the same inside lace frame from the second Map of My Heart sheet. Since the papers were heavy in weight, they were very sturdy and worked well when used as page embellishments. I adhered the largest lace frame to a round sheet of cardstock and placed a large sepia picture in the middle. Then I placed the inside smaller frame on pop dots and adhered it directly over my photo. I also cut out two more of the blue cherubs and placed them on pop dots to add extra dimension as well. I embellished the page by using a glitter pen to color in the angel's wings and around the frames, and then I added a few rhinestones, some glitter glue, and a small bit of journaling around the outside of the small frame.

I thought the Linen & Lace collection had a very classy and luxurious feel to it. The quality of the papers, stickers, stamps, and lace were excellent and all together very unique. This collection offers a distinctive take on foreign travels and designs and it provides papercrafters a chance to create very unique projects!

Review by Chris

Each time I see a new collection from Dove of the East, I am in awe. And I wonder to myself, “How can it get any better than this?” And then I see yet another new collection, and again I am in awe and just marvel at the beauty and creativity of each new paper and element. The new expansion set to the Russia Journey line, called Russia Journey, Linen and Lace Collection, is no exception. This new collection brings out the softer side, full of linen, lace, flowers and subtle colors. With papers named Olga’s Dream, Map of my Heart, Afternoon Sunlight and Anastasia, you know you’re in for a delightful trip through gardens and tea rooms as you look at them. The collection includes 6 new cardstock-weight patterned papers, new charms and new ribbons, all complimenting the beautiful papers. And now there are stamps! Yes, you read correctly. There are now clear stamps in designs that compliment the patterned paper. What a fantastic addition to an already great collection!

For this review, I received two each of the six papers, three silver buttons, a yard of gorgeous velvet leaves and a set of Russia Journey Foreign Accents clear stamps. It’s so hard to describe how beautiful these papers are in real life and the photos just don’t do them justice. The images are full of Battenberg lace, crochet doilies, and embroidered floral designs. When I see them, I cannot help but think of my grandmother, whose home was full of heirloom examples of the designs pictured on these papers.

On my first layout, I used the lace edge of the design in the Map of my Heart paper to create a pseudo-scalloped edge for my elongated photo mat. The background is a combination of the Afternoon Sunlight paper paired with Iced Azalea cardstock from Prism. The green accents are also cardstock. I used the velvet leaves to border the photo and the stamps to add accents in the cardstock sections. A few of my own crochet flowers completed this layout.

My second layout uses just one sheet of Dove of the East Russia Journey paper – Anastasia. This paper is just too beautiful to cover up. It frames my photo perfectly. I stamped, punched and colored some flowers from Prism’s new mulberry cardstock to enhance the photo. A charm (Climbing Rose) and some flocked lace stickers from Dove finished off this layout perfectly!

Finally I created a card for a friend who is ill. When I looked at the clear stamps that I received for this review, one of them looked so much like fully-opened butterfly wings that I decided to use it to create a butterfly. I stamped in black on a section of the Afternoon Sunlight paper, then covered the wings with Glossy Accents. Using foam tape, I popped the butterfly off a piece cut from the Samovar Garden paper. The butterfly's path is outlined with bugle beads and the antennae are pieces of black wire. This was a fun card to create and I think the final result is stunning.

The new Linen and Lace Collection from Dove of the East's Russia Journey line is absolutely gorgeous. The lace and floral design really takes me back in time to my grandmother’s house. This collection would be perfect for heritage photos, as well as current pictures of little girls, weddings, girl friends' night out or any other reason you can think of to add a little feminine touch to your layouts and projects.

Review by Penny

Dove of the East's new Russia Journey Collection takes on a whole new hue with its soft pastel colors. Pinks, baby blue, lavendar, white and light yellow with some medium green are scattered sweetly across the patterns of lace, flowers and cherubs. They are romantic and beautiful to look at.

The two brightest patterns in the mix are "Blue Room" which features a purple and blue circle design, blue background and a purple frame, and "Samovar Garden" which is blue with flower borders on both top and bottom, and a picture of an urn at the center of the border on the bottom.

"Olga's Dream" is pink with white flowers and lace designs while "Afternoon Sunlight" has a yellow center with pink flowers floating around it.

"Map of My Heart" has a green, blue and pink ribbon, flower and cherub theme that continues the circle pattern in the center.

"Anastasia" is a gorgeous yellow with a set of blue-purple flowers trailing from one corner to the other with a small scroll image in the center.

Papers retail for $.60 each. Although the papers are only printed on one side, the quality construction and heavy weight makes them well worth the price.

New with this collection is the "Foreign Accents Flocked Lace Stickers," a set of four die cut border stickers--one each of light yellow, pale pink, baby blue and seafoam green--with a soft flocked texture. They provide a wonderful accent to my pages. The stickers retail for $5.99.

I received one yard of the Honey Lace ribbon, an incredibly detailed pale yellow knit ribbon with flowers and scallops. It looks homemade and so lovely with these papers!

I also received three buttons for this review, the silver filigree "Wandering Heart," "Climbing Rose" and "Vladimir" buttons. These buttons have a shank on them which can be removed with heavy shears if desired. Buttons retail for $3.99 for a package of three.

I saved the best part for last - new acrylic stamps!! The "Russia Journey Foreign Accents" stamps are simply breathtaking. They are unique and definitely speak to the creativity and quality that Dove of the East products' exude. There are 11 clear acrylic stamps in this set. There are scrolls, flowers, borders, and leaf patterns, each being extremely detailed and intricate. Retailing at $14.49, these stamp sets are a steal!

My first project uses the Samovar Garden patterned paper, a felt border sticker, a silver heart button and a tiny stamp border directly on top of the flocked border.

My second project uses the "Anastasia" paper, which I cut a few leaves out of and layered them over the photo. I created a border behind the photo with the Honey Lace ribbon. I also used some of the yellow patterned paper for my stamp image and placed it in the bottom-right corner of my page with foam adhesive.

Review by Stephanie

I was first introduced to Dove of the East in late 2007 when I was asked to review their India Journey. With that first kit, I was hooked. Each kit is jam packed with product which are absolutely incredible. This month I was so excited to find out I’d be reviewing Dove of the East’s Russia Journey. I couldn’t wait to dive right in and play. Honestly, the pictures don’t do these papers justice.

I received 2 sheets of each of the 6 designs from the Russia Journey, each with it’s own special name: Afternoon Sunlight, Olga’s Dream, Map of My Heart, Blue Room, Anastasia and Samovar Garden. The colors are awesome – lavender, blue, green, yellow, and pink were prominent in various patterns. I also received 4 different die cut flocked lace stickers, a carded organza pouch which held velveteen leaf shaped ribbon, 3 metal buttons, and a wonderful stamp set that mirrored the pattern papers.

Once I opened my box, I had to start working with these papers right away. The Samovar Garden immediately caught my eye and I knew I had to use this paper first. Having just picked up a cute stamp, I knew I had to showcase the teapot and the surrounding design. I used the largest Nestabilities scalloped circle die to cut the image, then inked the edges. I chose 2 different complementary cardstock colors as my backing. Embossing and lightly inking the pink cardstock created a beautiful card.

The only difficulty I encountered with this collection was in trying to layer the papers. Because they are all so different and so beautiful, I didn’t want to cover them. I wanted to showcase them. And I think I accomplished that in my first layout. I printed pictures of my parents with their grandsons and I was holding them till the right paper came along. The Blue Room was perfect for this layout. I chose to cut some flowers from Map of My Heart, then attached a stamped image as the focal point from the included stamp set. A tag with journaling finished off my layout.

My next layout focuses on the only picture I have of me with my mother, my grandmother and my great grandmother taken in England in 1963, just before we moved. I thought that the Map of My Heart paper would be perfect. To keep the focus on the photo as well as the paper, I cut out the design as well as the center of the paper. I thought this provided a nice frame for my photo. Doodling around the paper and adding stamps in all four corners in white, added a nice contrast to the black #4 and the stamped letters.

Dove of the East has done another wonderful job with this Russia collection. I would highly recommend you add this kit to your want list. It is so much prettier in real life. With the papers that I still have, I can easily create another layout or 2 and as well as any number of cards. Thank you so much for the opportunity to review this wonderful line.

Review by Pomaika`i

I fell in love with Dove of the East Designs the first time I saw them a few months ago in a Scrapfriends review. If you're new to Dove of the East products, you will quickly learn that this is not your average everyday theme paper, but very sophisticated, gorgeous arty designs for stepping away from ordinary day to day life. However, that said, I have seen many everyday themes turned extraordinary when scrapped with Dove of the East products. I'm always up for new adventure, so I was beyond excited to play with these Dove of the East goodies.

I was asked to review the Russia Journey Linen and Lace Collection which included: 12 sheets of single sided 12 x 12" patterned papers--2 pages each of these six designs; Olga's Dream, Blue Room, Map of My Heart, Samovar Garden, Afternoon Sunlight and Anastasia, one card of Foreign Accents Flocked Lace Stickers, one yard of Honey Lace tied up in a deep blue organza bag, three beautiful and sturdy metal buttons; Climbing Rose, Valdimir, and Wandering Heart, and one Russia Journey Foreign Accents Clear Stamp Set.

Because my experience with things Russian is limited, I asked a native Russian friend for her opinion on the authenticity of the Russia Journey Linen and Lace Collection. Overall she was impressed with the designs, and I got a kick out of watching her eyes light up when she saw the Samovar Garden pattern (with the beautiful Samovar or elaborate tea urn) and the Blue Room paper of which she said represented the colors used by royalty. She told me that the collection had a nice mix of country folk-art feel and Czarist period images.

Back to my own experiences with the Russia Journey Linen and Lace Collection. After I got over being speechless, the first word that popped into my mind was "Gorgeous!" Each patterned paper is rich with intricate and detailed patterns, very delicate and sweet, just like what you would expect to see when walking into a Grandmother's formal living room, you know, with antimacassars on the sofa, table runners, and doilies under vases on the end tables. I love the weight of the paper, it is medium-heavy weight, sturdy enough to use for altering items without worrying about wrinkling or tearing, and also sturdy enough to use as stand alone background paper for a scrapbook page with heavy embellishments. I was very pleased to learn that these papers are acid free, elemental chlorine free and come from commercially managed forests.

Dove of the East's Russia Journey Foreign Accents Clear Stamp Set is made for acrylic block stamping. The there are eleven beautifully detailed images already cut and mounted on a clear plastic storage sheet (7.25 x 4"). This collection has a good assortment of images that can be used as corners, borders, or stand alone images. I found that the impressions created by these stamps were clear and crisp, and the clear view made it really easy to create continuous borders or multiple image designs.

The Foreign Accents Flocked Lace Stickers by Dove of the East are soft pastel colored stickers that coordinate well with the whole collection. The images are flocked to add the texture and softness of lace to your projects with the convenience of stickers. Each border is made of heavy weight, good quality paper which I was able to remove several times without damage before finding the correct placement on my card. The borders are twelve inches long.

I thought that this collection would make a beautiful Birthday Calendar and Greeting Card Organizer. I wanted to show off how well the patterns, colors and designs of the Russia Journey Collection coordinated with each other. Since I wanted to highlight the paper designs, I used minimal embellishments--just a piece of lace sticker here and there with some stamping to complete the cards. I cut the shank off the buttons and sanded them flat to use them as embellishments for the top outside and inside of the tin lid. I embossed a stamp design and cut it out to create some detail on the outside tin lid.

Hydrangeas have been special to me since my trip to Japan in 1993 when I spent some time with an old family friend and a new relative (on my husband's side). For this layout, I used the beautiful "Blue Room" paper with it's pre-printed frame. I layered some flower punchies in paper and vellum to create embellishments, and finished the photo off with a frame of Honey Lace. I gathered some of the honey lace into a little flower to add some interest at the bottom corner of the photo, and placed the "Wandering Heart" button in the center of the lace flower. The Dove of the East Honey Lace encircling my flower photo symbolizes the warmth of family and friendship that I associate with the ajisai or hydrangea.

It was my sincere pleasure to work with Dove of the East's Russia Journey, Linen and Lace Collection. Even though I am very not familiar with Russian images, nor have I ever been to Russia, I found it easy to create some lovely projects. The colors and designs of these papers, stamps and embellishments included in this collection will be a unique addition to any scrapbook, altered project or card. Doveen Schecter, owner and designer of Dove of the East has done a remarkable job turning her life's passion for collecting items from exotic locales into unique and beautiful materials that every crafter can use. In addition to this Russia Journey Collection, Dove of the East offers three other comprehensive collections; Japan Journey, China Journey and India Journey, each even more spectacular than the next, how is that possible?!
